RE: Conservation
Elmo,
You and I have known each other for a long time; you know that I would keep my mouth shut (especially lately), if I had no knowledge on a subject. I have become the POC for Federal Utility Usage for all military facilities in
KY.
There is a crisis developing in front of us. Kentucky water levels (last time I heard) are at the same level as last July. Conservation techniques haven't been implemented, or at least no permanent ones. I know that conservation will not be an issue until the utility companies decide to jack up the prices. Then, it will become a more serious issue. People only notice the money leaving their own wallets.
The government is included in the group if "people". The major gas hike that kicked in last year decimated our budget for the coming years. Electric bills will rise, too. Many companies burn natural gas to create electricity.
My office has enforced policies to conserve in many ways. One way is to turn off your computer monitor whenever you leave your office overnight. This may not seem like much, but when thousands of monitors in the state follow this policy, a lot of money is saved (your taxes go somewhere else). We enforce the control of thermostats. We keep them set at 68 for the winter, and they are turned down to a cool 55 overnight in unoccupied facilities. Construction of new facilities in the state have requires highly insulated roofs and windows. Solar lighting is being installed at several installations, thus eliminating electric bills for unoccupied areas.
I put 110 miles on my car every day, and that's home to work and back only. I car pool, but sometimes, arrangements cannot be met with my riding partner (forcing me to drive by myself). You want to save money for travel this summer? Try Delta.com and be ready to leave within a few days notice (awesome deals). Take a train (Elmo, there's a train that runs from Chicago to New Orleans, and passes through Fulton, KY...there is no reason you can't catch on the way back north). Don't buy gas on the weekends. Gas stations jack up their gas prices on Thursday, and lower them on Monday. This is done to get people traveling for the weekend.
Well, I have thought way too much, and I am getting dizzy. Later, all.
Corn!!!!
